Motor neurone disease (MND) is a rare, progressive neurological condition that affects the motor neurones—nerves in the brain and spinal cord responsible for controlling muscle movement. As these nerves degenerate, individuals experience muscle weakness, stiffness, and wasting, leading to difficulties with mobility, speech, swallowing, and breathing. In the UK, MND affects up to 5,000 adults at any given time, with a lifetime risk of 1 in 300. While there is currently no cure, support plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for those affected. The Motor Neurone Disease Association offers a range of services, including specialist care, equipment loans, financial support grants, and a dedicated helpline, to assist individuals living with MND and their families. By providing comprehensive care and resources, such support helps manage symptoms, maintain independence, and offer emotional comfort throughout the progression of the disease.
